  Project Description

For this Game Jam we were asked to create a game befitting of the theme "Make Us Laugh" for this my group came together and decided that we were to create a Rogue like deck builder game heavily inspired by Slay the Spire.

The aspects of the game to make the players laugh is more to do with the art style for the cards and band members in game. In addition to the art style the sprites would have and animation of them playing instruments, or for the crowd dancing to the music. This would increase in playback speed increasing to sub-supersonic based on how much Hype the player had accumulated within that Stage [Level].

  Main Responsibilities

I came forwards and asked to be the level designer for this project as I thought it would be really interesting and a new experience creating such a unique level which I wouldn't think I'd get the chance to.

challenges:

  • Due to wanting to be a level designer for a pub and concert myself and the 3D artist I would be working with had to come up and decide on the style of pub we would like to replicate as there was so many options. This took longer than anticipated as we would go polar opposites and needed a team vote on what we wanted.

  • Another challenge was, we didn't have time to create a block out kit within the 52 hours we were given so I had to use whatever restricted resources I had to create a generic white box.

  • Level Design:

  • Creating a white box for the Pub level as well as the stadium level and iterating on them further.

  • Using the assets given to me by the artist I then started to reconstruct certain bits of the levels making them more realistic as well as incorporating where the lights will go.

  • Once the final assets were completed I then started to add in VFX and tampering with the lights making it seem more realistic to how a concert would actually be.

About

My name is Kyle Kerr
I am an undergrad at Teesside University.

Video Games have always been apart of my life and through them I have learnt so many valuable lessons as well as experiences either through the game themselves or the community surrounding them. From the story of Halo: Reach to the gameplay mechanics of The Saboteur in addition to the more unique mechanics of Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor.

As a games designer I aim to bring new and engaging experiences to my work while creating the same enjoyment and passion for games I had when I was younger. Besides digital games I also appreciate, board game, documentaries, movies and reading into new things.
